Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Lawsuit Information

If you were not aware, Johnson & Johnson, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, has been sued multiple times because of the talcum powder that they sell. This seemingly harmless product, one that is used on babies every day, has theoretically been linked to ovarian cancer. What is unique about this type of lawsuit is no scientific evidence has been used to prove that it does. Many tests have been done, but none have conclusively shown that talcum powder is directly responsible for the development of this cancer. This is why many people are confused about this entire situation. First of all, they don’t know if talcum powder is safe. Second, if there is no science to support talcum powder is a carcinogen, how in the world is Johnson & Johnson being sued by¬†ovarian cancer lawyers so successfully? Let’s go over the facts related to these class-action lawsuits which have proven to be very lucrative for those that have developed this condition.

Why Is Johnson & Johnson Losing?

The primary reason that they are losing is that there are so many women that have developed this condition. There have been awards from $100 million to well over $400 million, given to women that now have this condition. It is awarded not based upon science but because of the simple fact that Johnson & Johnson lied. They had reports that they were covering up about the potential of talcum powder leading to problems similar to ovarian cancer. It is this cover-up that has led to them losing hundreds of millions of dollars over the last few decades. However, it still needs to be known if talcum powder is safe to use not only as an adult but with children as typically happens with each new board.

Why Would Women Use Talcum Powder?

The main reason that women use this is that they need to feel more confident about certain odors they may produce. They will place this in their underwear, and when they do this every day, sometimes for decades, this is what leads to ovarian cancer. The thought process is that by placing this in their underwear, over time, small amounts of talc can make its way into the ovaries. When this is done on a continual basis, the crystalline structure of the talcum powder is what eventually leads to the development of cancer. Some have related this to similar products like asbestos which can lodge itself inside of a person’s lungs. In the same way, the crystals of talcum powder can lodge themselves in the ovaries, leading to the development of cancer that is caused.

Do All Women Receive Large Settlements?

According to studies, not all women have received large settlements. There are thousands that have received smaller settlements. It is always the person that initiates the lawsuit that ends up with the most. Additionally, significant settlements tend to go to those that are terminally ill. It is a form of compensation for what may have caused their cancer to begin with. If it were not for all of the other women that have come forward, and the sheer coincidence that they have been using talcum powder four years or decades, that leads the courts to rule in favor of the women that have this condition.

Is There An Alternative To Talcum Powder?

Cornstarch is a viable alternative. In fact, Johnson & Johnson has started to produce a product that only uses this corn-based product. It has been scientifically proven to be completely safe. That’s why it is considered to be the next best alternative for those that prefer using some powder on this area of their body. To prevent any substantial problems from happening, even if a woman has used talcum powder for decades, they need to switch over to cornstarch right away. It may not provide the same level of results, but it is better than nothing and can be very useful as a substitute for those that use talcum powder regularly.

Talcum powder is not inherently a dangerous substance. It has never been labeled as a carcinogen. However, because of how it has interacted with the bodies of some women, some of which you have died, it is considered to be a potentially lethal substance. It may not be labeled as such, and it will continue to be used by mothers and their babies. It is because of the possibility that these problems can occur that Johnson & Johnson will continue to lose lawsuits as more women come forward. Until medical science can conclusively prove that talcum powder is this dangerous, it will still be available in stores. It is likely safe to use with babies but is certainly to be avoided if you are thinking about using this every day for many decades.
